Canadian Rockies Series Overview
For the past two centuries people have been making their homes on the eastern slopes of the Canadian Rockies. Where did they come from? How did they survive and what has become of their legacy?
The Canadian Rockies Series, is a collection of stories sharing the history, culture and traditions of Alberta’s eastern slopes. The 13-part one-hour documentary series reveals the people who have lived and worked in some of the most remote regions of the Rocky Mountains. This 13-part series has been 13-years in the making.

The Canadian Rockies Series has been nominated for twenty-two (22) Alberta Film and Television Rosie Awards over the past seven (7) years. Nominations includes; Best Documentary Series; Best Documentary; Best Cinematographer, Best Director, Best Musical Score and Best Overall Sound.

1 Long Road Home: 45:13 minutes
“Long Road Home” is a story of a 200 kilometer, 12-day horseback expedition through the Canadian Rocky Mountains featuring the return of Mountain Métis descendants, whose forefathers were forced out of Canada’s Jasper National Park in 1909.
2011 Awards: Long Road Home was an Official Selection for the 2011 Dreamspeaker’s Film Festival.
2 Wildie: 44:29 minutes
“Wildie” is a story that features two young native women as they each start and train wild horses. Both teens embrace the traditions and culture of their forefathers who lived and worked in the Canadian Rockies.
2013 Awards: Wildie was nominated for the Best Original Musical Score (non-fiction over 30 min) for Alberta Film and Television Rosie Awards
3 Women of Willmore Wilderness: 44:51 minutes
“Women of Willmore Wilderness” shares the story of riding the Rockies thru time, revealing the experiences of mountain women past and present. The story reveals how their experiences in mountain culture, have deeply inspired them.
2014 Awards: Women of Willmore Wilderness was nominated for two 2014 Alberta Film & Television Rosie Awards nominations for Best Documentary (non-fiction over 30 minutes) and Best Original Musical Score (non-fiction over 30 minutes.)

“Ancestors Calling” shares the Mountain Métis culture through the music and stories of award-winning musician Laura Vinson; a descendent of the early voyageurs Louis Loyer and Louis Karakuntie.

5 Mountain Mustang: 44:03
“Mountain Mustang” shares the story of Master Horseman Larry Nelles as he teaches true horsemanship through feel, sensitivity, kindness, patience, and a soft manner. Larry teaches three young horsemen his unique way of communicating with their four-legged friends.

6 Mountain Men: 45:28 Minutes
Share in the adventures of “Mountain Men” who couldn’t see spending their lives penned up; having devoted their efforts to being free spirits. The characters have strived to be independent souls, travelling the old pack trails in the Canadian Rockies where few have journeyed.

7 Trials & Tribulations of Old Trailmen: 46:18
“Trials and Tribulations of Old Trailmen” shares the uphill battle of recovering from a stroke and finding a way back into the Rockies. Recovering from a stroke, an 81-year-old mountain man wonders if he’ll ever get back to the places he’s loved his entire life—or if he’d ever even walk again. Despite the odds, he overcomes adversity. In riding horses, he borrows freedom.

8 Spirit of the Rockies: 45:45 minutes
“Spirit of the Rockies” shares the saga of an 86-year-old Iroquois-Cree Elder who has one last desire. Tom Wanyandie travels 200-kilometers on horseback to restore his grandfather’s grave deep in Willmore Wilderness Park.

“Ghosts on the Jackpine” shares the story of a family and their three dogs as they venture on a packhorse expedition, exploring the rich history of some of the most remote regions in Willmore Wilderness Park.

“Roots that Go Deep” shares the story of a family as they face the challenges of starting four young wild mares, passing the traditions on to a younger generation as they travel the trails in Willmore Wilderness Park.

12 The Forgotten Ones:
“The Forgotten Ones” is a modern-day tale that weaves together present day and historic footage. The story shares how the old time mountain men mentor young people who want to learn the skillsets of their grandfathers—the voyageurs of yester-year.
2020 Awards: The Forgotten Ones was nominated for five 2020 Alberta Film and Television Rosie Awards. These include Best Documentary Series, Best Director (non-fiction over 30 minutes), Best Musical Score (non-fiction over 30 minutes), Best Cinematography and Best Sound (non-fiction over 30 minutes).
13 Pieces of the Sky.
Filming in an environment with little room for error, a historical and adventure filmmaker, Susan Feddema-Leonard, shares her path to success as she captures stunning footage and untold tales from some of the most remote locations of the Canadian Rockies. “Pieces of the Sky” details how Producer and Director Susan Feddema-Leonard managed, against all odds, to produce the 13-part one-hour Canadian Rockies Series. She had a dream that seemed impossible to achieve, yet never quit!
